Idioms! Idioms! Idioms! and free Halloween tags

It's time to teach idioms again this year. I really enjoy using and teaching new idioms to my students, but it sure is a hard concept to learn! Year after year, my EL students tend to think the phrase literally means what it says.  But with practice and re-teaching, it’ll soon become quite fun for them.  I wanted to show you what I’m using in the classroom this year.  I typed up the idioms to be used as flash cards/task cards in small groups.  Students will read the idiom and try to figure out what it means before reading the real meaning on the back.  They will then draw a silly picture that matches the idiom.

Free Classroom Printables

I like to organize and display my students' birthdays every year.  So, this year I made these little cards to write their birthdays on.  I taped them on a thick string hanging inside a white chipboard framelike rectangle.  Print them out and add a few embellishments and you have yourself a birthday calendar.

If you use GLAD strategies in your school/classroom.  The following are the three GLAD standards for students to follow.  It's very simple- becasue all rules fall under these three standards.  Students need to make a good decision at all times, show everyone respect (their teachers and classmates), and learn how to solve their own problems when it arises.  I saw a cute little thing on Pinterest how to display your classroom rules.  So, I made one too. 

Free tub labels

Just trying to do some organizing in the classroom.  I saw quite a few different teachers who had beautiful labels already done.  However, I didn't need every single label or they didn't have something I needed.  So I ended up making my own.  Here is a copy of the labels I made.  They are 2 inches by  3 inches.  Font size is 35.  Just right click and save if you want it.  Follow my blog for many more freebies.  Thanks!

 

I also made group number labels if you would like some.  Labels are 3 1/2 X 3 1/4 inches.

Student Clipboards

Just a quick post to show some new things I've been working on.  Student clipboards and book markers. 

I did some clipboards last school year as well, but I didn't modge podge it and my students wrote on it.  So this year, I not only modge podged it but I also typed up some inspirational quotes to glue on top of the paper.

I had a lot of scrap papers lying around.  So I just cut the corners and punched a hole for the ribbon.  As for the paint papers.  I got it from my friendly local Walmart. 

First Day of School Treat

Who does not like a treat on their first day back to school.  This is what I decided to do for my teacher co-workers.  I've been wanting to do something with a pillow box and came across a few ideas.  Here is my result. 

I used the wrap it up Cricut cartridge to cut out the pillow boxes.  And then using my scallop circle punch - I punched out the center to add a little more detail.  I then glued transparency paper under to close the hole.  As for the tags, I created it on my scrapbook software.  Which I am more than willing to share. :)  I have two different types of tags.  One says "Wishing you a M&M Most Marvelous First Day" while the other tag does not have First Day so you could use it for any day.

Antonym and Synonym Flash Cards (free printables)

Hi everyone.  I recently opened up a TPT (teachers pay teachers) account.  Just to try a few things here and there.  I uploaded a couple of things.  Antonyms (opposites) and synonyms (same meaning) flash cards.  These cards can be used individually, with a partner or in small groups.  You could play a memory/match game with these words. Hope you can find it useful.  Thanks for downloading.

Behavioral Chart

I have worked on this behavioral chart for a day and a half .  Crazy! I know.  I've been thinking of going back to using this old discipline method for my next school year.  Of course, all it is - is if a student misbehaves  he/she then has to move a card back (until the last card is showing - which means - phone call home to mom and dad).  
However, I didn't want to use my lame old pocket chart.  Which I have no idea where it is.  So I started googling for some ideas and came upon some beautiful library pockets from Thoughts of a Cardmaking.  Totally inspiring! Gorgeous pockets.  Too pretty to have in the class room, but I wanted to make it anyways .  So I did.

Here are the steps to the 34 of 36 library pockets I made.  Two of them are from $Dollar Tree.  Yes, they do sell them.  It comes in a packet of 10 pockets (hot pink, neon green, aqua, and bright yellow and orange).  My classroom colors this year are aqua, light/bright green, and black.  I didn't feel like buying 17 packets just to use the two aqua pockets from each packet.  So I thought I would buy a packet to use as a template to make my own pockets. 

1.  Cut cardstock paper at 5 5/8 inches X 7 6/8 inches

2.  Lay paper horizontally (just like the above picture) and score at 1 inch and at 4 3/8 inches.  This is where you will fold later.

3.  Turn the paper vertically (the tall way) and score at 5/8 of and inch and at 4 3/8 inches. 

4.  Cut out the corners that are colored in red. 

5.  This is what it looks like after you cut the 3 corners out (turn it back horizontally).

6.  Fold at 1inch and 4 3/8 inches (where you scored earlier) and the bottom part.

7.  I used my 2 1/2 inch circle puncher to punch out a piece from the front of the pocket.  Which will make it easier to stick cards in and out.

8.  Before punching.  I turned the paper upside-down so it's easier to punch.  I also turned my puncher around so I can see how much I need to punch off.

9.  Fold and glue to form the pocket.  You might need to make some adjustments in cutting a little here in there or refolding certain parts before gluing the flaps.  

 

10.  You could keep the corners the way they are or punch them.  I used my corner puncher to round them off. 

11. Embellish it!  I did a lot of stamping and gluing of flowers and buttons. I then glued the pockets onto a black poster paper, but you could just staple them onto your wall or wherever.  This doesn't have to be used for a behavioral chart.  It could be a count down advent calendar to any holiday or used as a gift card holder.  There you have it.
